  • Mary-Louise Yoga Upstairs at Six Yoga Studio Hove

    Mary-Lou | Yoga Workshops

Mary-Louise began her yogic journey more than two decades ago when working as an operatic soloist. A dedicated mindfulness practice soon brought her to the yoga mat and today, her passion is to share the huge benefits of yoga and mindfulness techniques.

Mary-Lou’s students find her enthusiasm for the practice inspiring and her purest joy is to support each class participant in finding their own, nurturing practice. Mary-Lou skilfully weaves captivating themes and the philosophy of yoga in gentle and engaging ways into her sequences.

“I welcomes all levels of ability and believe that it is important to let go of ideas about ‘being flexible or being bendy enough’ for yoga. The invitation is to simply enjoy being on your own mat.”

Mary-Louise loves to teach Yin Yoga and a combination of Yin and Yang. The balance in energies this approach supports is something Mary-Lou loves to share.

By leading her students gently to link breath with movement, Mary-Lou inspires a love of yoga in each and every class. If you are looking for the opportunity to travel inwards and embark on the journey of a lifetime, email Mary-Lou for up-to-date news on her Workshops and Day Retreats.

  • Oli Howker Upstairs@SIX Yoga Studio Hove

    Oli | Power Yoga

Oli’s yoga practice began whilst she was in her final year of university in 2016. After graduating, she began working as an assistant in a number of nurseries and primary schools, both mainstream and in a Montessori setting. Over these years, she saw first hand how school is such a formative time and how we can forget the many stressors children face at this age.

In 2019 she began teaching children’s yoga on the weekends as she wanted the children she worked with to be able to access and experience the many benefits of mindfulness and yoga in a way that made sense to them.

Since Covid-19 she began teaching so much online that she then began to run Balance Kids full time! She now teach in nurseries, schools, studios and even care homes!

Coupled to this, Oli now teaches a weekly Power Yoga at Upstairs@SIX Yoga Studio Hove. Expect to leave the studio warmer than when you went in! Her students love her sunny energy as well as her accessible teaching style.

  • Chess Upstairs@SIX Yoga Studio Hove

    Chess | Yoga For All

Chess is a professional dance artist, movement teacher, and creative facilitator with over 10 years’ experience. She graduated from Northern School of Contemporary Dance (with a BA Hons) in 2013 and furthered her training with Jasmin Vardimon’s JV2. Between 2014-2020 Chess co-founded comedic dance-theatre company The Hiccup Project and worked as both co-Artistic Director & performer; creating, performing, and touring nationally with three critically acclaimed & award-winning works.

Through-out this time, Chess taught movement/ dance extensively within the UK, within colleges, universities, institutions, and community groups to ages 5-85. Her passion for facilitating and inspiring others with a love of moving to feel good continues to grow and Chess has supported many in finding their confidence in moving freely.

“Chess casts a spell within her classes, and everyone seems to leave feeling confident, calm and energised.”

Despite her love of movement Chess struggled with a Yoga practice when first introduced to it as part of her dance training. Through many years of self-practice and study, Chess discovered a deep interest in the benefits of understanding, at a deeper level, the relationship between breath & movement.

Chess completed her 200hr Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training with Sampoorna Yoga School, India in 2020. She is excited to be starting a regular community class at Upstairs at Six to guide and inspire others with a deeper connection to body and breath.

This class is designed to enhance a connection to breath, body, and self, whilst nourishing the body through strengthening and lengthening of muscles. Suitable for all levels, all are welcome.

Chess teaches regularly to the community of Brighton & Hove through creative workshops, movement classes, and dance technique classes at Smikle Dance Studio, and at Varndean College where she works as Programme Lead for the Dance BTEC course.

  • Marzena Upstairs@SIX Yoga Studio Hove

Marzena | Slow Yoga Flow & Nidra

Marzena Weiss ~ A Room of Your OM

Yoga found Marzena surprisingly early in life when as a child she experienced the magic of acupressure and mudras, introduced by her best friend’s mum, a self-taught healer. The practice came later in life, and it became an absolute love affair. This led to an ongoing journey of curiosity and joy in discovering how deeply yoga affected her life as well as her mental and physical health.

Yoga Alliance certified in Vinyasa; Hatha flow, and Yin, in training with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli as a Total Yoga Nidra Facilitator Teacher, Marzena trained in England, Poland and Spain.

Her teaching is informed by numerous wellbeing and yoga webinars and workshops in person and online with teachers from around the world.

“Honouring your body and your need to rest is what you can expect in sessions with me.

Yoga, to me, is learning about our own inner landscape and teaching ourselves to breathe, focus and also to rest and heal. It is a process of uncovering the layers of conditioning and habits we all acquire throughout our lifetime and returning to the core of ourselves with curiosity and awareness.”

It’s an approach which provides a high intensity, yet low impact, exercise. This class is designed to strengthen muscles both large and small through a series of exercises which include tiny, precise movements, with high repetition. This method uses the whole body through balance, weight-bearing, and works deep into muscles to find a burn! Barre is a safe and inclusive way to strengthen and stretch the muscles we need to support healthy alignment and posture, helping to prevent injury. Everyone is welcome!

  • Caroline Upstairs@Six Yoga Studio Hove

    Caz | Slow Flow Yoga

It was a slow burn to the love of yoga for Caroline (Caz). The first class she attended felt forced, fast and she felt inflexible. It wasn’t until 3 years later that a mindful class with an amazing Savasana changed her perspective on it and had a profound impact on her noticing how yoga can be used in daily life off the mat through breathing techniques, mindfulness and self-compassion.

With 10 years of experience training and working in healthcare, Caroline has an understanding and knowledge of the impact of illness and disability on physical and mental health. She helps people to find ways to manage this in daily life including empowering people to achieve goals despite barriers or limitations they face. She completed her Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga Training after years of self-practice benefits.

She believes in supporting people to find a space within themselves where they can feel comforted, supported and inspired through mindful movement, breathing and meditation. She has a passion for using the breath as a tool on and off the mat to anchor people to the present moment and reduce stress. Caroline’s classes aim to leave you feeling rested and calmer with tools to use to manage anxiety and stress in the everyday, a toolkit for daily life.

Her mentality is that flexibility is not required for yoga, yoga is for everybody from every background and it is about giving yourself time on the mat and hopefully gaining some peace to take with you. A tranquil collective practice is something she has found powerful. Her classes are a friendly space to connect without judgement or simply a chance to be quiet and still in the rapid world.

She currently teaches slow flow yoga on Fridays at 5pm.
